Biogeochemical impact of tropical instability waves in the equatorial Pacific

چکیده
Tropical Instability Waves (TIW) have been suggested to fertilize the equatorial Pacific in iron leading to enhanced ecosystem activity. Using a coupled dynamical–biogeochemical model, we show that contrary to this suggestion, TIWs induce a decrease of iron concentration by 20% at the equator and by about 3% over the “TIW box” [90°W180, 5°N-5°S]. Chlorophyll decreases by 10% at the equator and 1% over the “TIW box”. This leads to a decrease of new production up to 10% at the equator (4% over the “TIW box”). TIW-induced horizontal advection brings more iron-depleted water to the equator than it exports iron-rich equatorial water to the north. Additional iron decrease is caused by TIW-induced iron vertical diffusion. These two mechanisms are partly counter balanced by a decrease of iron biological uptake, driven by weaker phytoplankton concentration, and to a lesser extend by TIWinduced iron vertical advection.

Nonlinear shallow water tropical instability waves on the equatorial plane: Genesis of two distinct types of waves
[1] The nonlinearity of Tropical InstabilityWaves (TIWs) is studied using shallow-water equations with various mean states from the equatorial Pacific Ocean. In the early linear stage, unstable TIWs, centered near 5 N with a wavelength about 1000 km and a period about one month, dominate the whole domain. However neutral Yanai waves with periods about 15–22 days emerge near the equator when the...
متن کاملExcitation of Equatorial Kelvin and Yanai Waves by Tropical Cyclones in an Ocean General Circulation Model
Tropical cyclones (TCs) actively contribute to the dynamics of Earth’s coupled climate system. They influence oceanic mixing rates, upper-ocean heat content, and air–sea fluxes, with implications for atmosphere and ocean dynamics on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Using an ocean general circulation model with modified surface wind forcing, we explore how TC winds can excite equatorial oce...

Sea surface height measurements from the TOPEX altimeter and dynamic height from Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean (TOGA TAO) moorings are used to explore sea level variability in the northeastern tropical Pacific Ocean. After the annual harmonic is removed, there are two distinct bands of variability: one band is centered at 5øN to 7øN and extends from 165øW to 110øW, ...

A La Niña took place in the equatorial Pacific in 1999, and strong tropical instability waves (TIWs) developed, causing large meanders of a sea surface temperature (SST) front between the equator and 3◦N. High-resolution satellite measurements are used to describe the variability of SST, surface wind velocity, column-integrated water vapor, cloud liquid water and precipitation associated with t...
متن کاملTropical Atlantic variability in a coupled physical–biogeochemical ocean model
A three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean was run for more than half a century (1949–2000) in order to characterize the ocean biogeochemical response to variable forcing over this period. The seasonal cycle in the equatorial upwelling zone agrees reasonably well with observations and other published simulations but underestimates phytoplankton biomass under s...
